DEEP RED ROOM

Watching this again while typing an essay on it. I love the three “Dollars” films so much.

If any of you are into story telling with visuals (as in, animation, film, comics, drawing or whatever), the golden rule for writing is to tell things with images before you think about dialogue. This is something that even goes into character design. Think as in-depth as you can about how a character looks. Why are they wearing that? Why is there body that shape? What sort of posture do they have? How did they get these scars? Etc. And aside from practical design choices, there’s also stylistic choices to be made. And then after you have them, there’s locations (which I find even more “open” to stylistic choices), composition and timing/tempo. The more you take these visual rules of thumb into consideration, the more detailed and weighty your story can be. It’s easy to forget them when you start off and you’ll make loads of mistakes, but the more you do it, the better you’ll naturally get.
